Like a handful of sand

A girl from a girl told me,
That love is like a handful of sand.

If you hold it gently,
Keep your fingers soft,
Relax your palm,
Staying open to the world,
And just let it be,
It can stay.
Supported by freedom it will be loyal to your hand.

But if you tighten into a fist,
Tense up your fingers,
Try to hold tight,
And shut your palm,
Closed from nature’s blessings,
You clutch in fear,
Then it will fall through the cracks.
You will lose that which you hoped to protect.

I have been sand and I have held sand.
The girl is right.
