This post is intended for any student of mine that tries to find me online. Giselle is a human. Giselle is also a high school teacher. In my 38 years I've learned a few things. Let me give you a little advice... This world is going to kick your ass. So be ready. Build up... Continue Reading →
Introvert Rising
For as long as I can remember, I have been energized by people. Big groups, parties, and by God you should see me at weddings! I am like a headless chook (chicken for non-Aussies) when surrounded by a crowd. The urge to be a part of, interact with, and essentially feed off the energy people... Continue Reading →
2018-2022: The Goon Years
In high school I was emo. In uni I was punk. In my twenties I was a hippie with a foul mouth. In my thirties, a fucking pirate. They say things get better with age, and in this story, I guess it's true. But nothing lasts forever, so here's a little tribute. I won't start... Continue Reading →
Some lessons learned
Today marks 35 years of my life and I'm taking a moment to reflect on it all. Please take the following with a grain of salt, as I'm still figuring things out. But, with age I have grown in audacity. So fuck it, here's what I've learned so far... 1- Your family is either batshit... Continue Reading →
Unsung hero
It takes him 3 times longer to tie these shoes. His black leather Doc Martens lace up all the way to his knee. They're well worn and just the perfect amount of dirty. On his head, a black bandana attempts to hide a receding hairline, once a fountain of luscious locks. His pants match his boots... Continue Reading →
Memory: Use it or lose it
Your mind was trained to hold onto things, from simple information like birthdays and common recipes to academic knowledge traditionally retained and ready to activate. We used to be more self sufficient twenty some years ago. We used our brains more twenty odd years ago. We used to remember things better about twenty years ago.
Now we just Google it.
And its got me thinking...are there some negative side-effects to this over-reliance?
Fears: real or imagined?
Is the world worse than it was or are we just more aware? An inner debate I often consider when discussing childhood amongst my friends. Once upon a time, there were no cell phones, just landlines and kids were free to go off into the unknown. Eventually we came home when the lights came on... Continue Reading →
Nice Guys really do Finish Last
In animals it is easy to see how being 'nice' can leave you worse off than your fellow creatures. If you've ever seen a mother dog, cat or pig feeding its babies from its tits, you'll see that sometimes not all the kids fit. I have no clue how many tits they come with, 5 maybe? But when there's more offspring than nipples, there's often a runt in the litter.
Lucky
If you're reading this, you're lucky. Not because my writing is any good, but because you're here. Here on Earth. And there is nothing more precious. Earlier this week, something tragic happened to a distant friend of mine. Distant enough that we haven't kept in touch. Close enough that the news hurt when I learned... Continue Reading →
Misguided Youth
Now I may be out of my jurisdiction here, but this kid needed a little objective guidance. I call it reassurance. So I asked him what he's good at or what he likes so far in school, and he gave me little to nothing to work with. Grades average. At least not a complete Holden Caulfield.
So I told him to...
